If you see a bicyclist riding on the street, it is your responsibility to avoid a collision with that individual. This can be done by reducing your speed and being patient in waiting for that person to pull over to a dedicated bike lane or to a shoulder.

It is important that you don’t honk your horn or flash your lights in an effort to get a bicyclist to move out of your way. Doing so may only serve to startle or blind someone who is already vulnerable to getting hurt if a crash were to occur.

Ideally, you’ll keep your focus on the road whenever you see a bicyclist or pedestrian in your vicinity. Generally speaking, this means putting your phone down, ending a conversation with a passenger or ignoring the radio until you have safely passed this person.
